About

What?

Adventures in Taste and Time looks at foods throughout history, exploring how they came to be, their cultural significance, and how they have evolved and were manufactured over time. Then I try to recreate classic recipes from available information and compare them to their modern-day counterparts. Results may vary.

When and Where?

Throughout the taste time continuum.

Who?

I am Helena Nichols and I am the writer and creator behind Adventures in Taste and Time. By day I work as a freelance Food Writer for organizations such as Mashed.com. By night I bake and learn about obscure and outdated foodways. I spend most of my free time wrangling my children, cats, and dogs with my husband.
Why should you bother listening to me? Because I also have a master’s degree in Food Studies from Chatham University’s School of Sustainability. This degree is part hands-on food exploration and part cultural and historical food research.

Why?

The internet has made information widely available, but with little filter for accuracy and truth. To quote Sherlock Holmes “Data data data, I cannot make bricks without clay.” The lack of citations and evidence available on the internet is infuriating. When there is well researched, cited information, you have to pay for it. I want to provide thoughtfully researched, accurate information, and full citations to my readers whenever possible. Plus, now I can claim my all my subscriptions on my taxes.

How?

By doing tedious research and following the turtles all the way down, ingesting copious amounts of caffeine in the form of tea, and grabbing any minute when I can to work.

And through donations from readers like you. Did you read the part about the kids and pets? Expenses add up and food and resources aren’t cheap.
